Spring Part 2

Spring is in full bloom and wow is it special up here in the Southern Sierras.  March gave us a little teaser then April started cold and snowy and stayed that way for most of the month...

but as we entered May the snow melted off and life began to bloom.  It is still quite brisk in the evenings and mornings - pretty much sweatshirt weather.  It is always a blessing to get up on a Saturday or Sunday, throw on some shorts, warm slippers and a sweatshirt, grab a fresh cup of coffee and go out on the deck to take in the cool fresh air and listen to the birds.

During the day it is quite pleasant in the sunshine, but not too hot.  The sun plays hide and seek as the big puffy white clouds drift by.  The breeze is soft and cool.  The temperature gradually climbs from the brisk 40’s and 50’s at sunrise to the comfortable 60’s and 70’s in the afternoon.  This is perfect weather for the dog to find a sunny spot and take a nap, and it is perfect weather for planting flowers!  It is only natural since you are surrounded by blooming trees and wildflowers.

Up here on Peterson Road spring usually lasts from the middle of March through the end of May or early June.  The weather is ideal and is often punctuated by brief instances of excitement.  It is not uncommon to have a May snowstorm or hailstorm, and brief thunderstorms are always welcome.  The night before last we had quite a windstorm - it was exciting, remarkable and at the same time soothing listening to the wind howl through the trees as they sway.  Throughout the night the sound would die down to a brief hush, gradually crescendo to a wild swirling roar and then die down again.

No matter what the weather brings, springtime in the mountains is awesome and beautiful.  It is the perfect time of year to enjoy the blessings of knowing that God is in control and faithfully bringing about the changes that usher in the magic of summer.  But the only way to truly appreciate it is to live here, so what are you waiting for?
