That's Entertainment

The Sierra Nevada Mountains can be rugged and remote.  Indeed one of the major draws for us is the lack of traffic.  In fact, there are no traffic lights on the entire mountain and only one stop sign, the one at the end of Peterson Road, between our house and the dock at Shaver Lake.  By contrast, valley traffic - six lanes wide and light to light - can be a real nightmare the few times a month we go to town for all of our errands.  On the positive side, the suburban valley is full of choices for food and entertainment.  To be sure, on errand day we often incorporate a movie or bowling and dinner at one of the many restaurants to choose from before heading back up the hill.

However just because we are rugged and remote doesn't mean we don't have great food and entertainment up here as well.  It's just different.  This past weekend, we enjoyed a wonderful Saturday evening with friends, food and games  - and we never left the mountain.  It was 'winter formal night' for Sierra High and our good friends' home was all a buzz getting their baby girl ready for her big date.  With all the commotion and stress we thought it would be nice if we invited them over for dinner so they didn't have to worry about that too.  So, after the pinning of the corsage,  pictures, and tears from mom, our friends came over and we enjoyed a wonderful meal.  We had a garden salad followed by fresh made bread, buttered noodles, asparagus and sauteed chicken in a mushroom, wine and cream sauce - delicious.  For dessert we even had braised pears in caramel sauce with vanilla ice cream and raspberries.  It was Y-U-M!

It is really surprising how easy it is to make delicious wholesome meals with just a little planning.  The week before we planned our meals, clipped our coupons and made our grocery and shopping lists.  The bread took all day but almost no attention whatsoever and only three ingredients.  The actual meal took about 45 minutes start to finish to make; and the dessert, well:  Peel, half and core the pears then cover with sugar and bake at 425 for half an hour.  Add one cup heavy cream and bake another fifteen minutes.  Serve them in a bowl with ice cream and add some raspberries on top and you will be amazed!

As for the entertainment, we went to the closet and got out a game.  Yes it was that easy!

We decided on Sequence.  The rules are simple and the game is strategic, quick-paced and engaging.  We laughed and joked as we played and when it was over, we relaxed with a glass of wine and talked.  We talked about family, friends, formals and proms gone by; we talked about children and church and challenges in life.  We talked about ten years ago, this week and the future.  Because the community is so small it is easy to share and care about each other and mutual friends.  The game and conversation lasted for hours before it was time to say goodnight.  As we walked our friends out to their car, the four of us paused and marveled at the number of starts in the sky.  We knew they would be fine getting home as it was just down and around the next hill.  We went back in, straightened up the kitchen and got ready for bed.

Definitely another great day on the mountain!  That's entertainment 😀
